Mathematical Universe Hypothesis

Postby Monk » Sun Aug 21, 2016 7:15 am

Is reality made of math?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathemati ... hypothesis

Tegmark's MUH is: Our external physical reality is a mathematical structure.

The Mathematical Universe Hypothesis is based on the Radical Platonist view that math is an external reality.

This would seem to propose that only external "objective" things are real and subjective experience is an illusion.

What if the collectively subjective experience of all minds(in the statistical sense) is the true reality and objective things are what is illusory? What if nothing exists outside the mind?

Scientists through the ages have noted, often with some astonishment, not only the remarkable success of mathematics in describing the natural world, but also the fact that the best mathematical formulations are usually those that are the most beautiful. And almost all research mathematicians pepper their description of important mathematical work with terms like “unexpected,” “elegance,” “simplicity” and “beauty.”

Maybe not that math is an external reality ...but the objects of study of human math are.
